The festival
A river becomes a tirtha.
When Jupiter enters Leo — once every twelve years — the sage Pushkara is believed to enter the Godavari, sanctifying the river. The first twelve days, the Adi Pushkaralu, are the most sacred: a holy dip taken now is held to cleanse sins and honour one's ancestors through tarpanam and pinda pradanam.
The tradition has been observed on these banks since the Chalukya period (10th–11th century). The 2015 edition drew tens of millions of pilgrims; for 2027, official planning anticipates more than eight crore, with new permanent ghats under construction along the Akhanda Godavari.

By train
- Rajahmundry Railway Station is the principal hub, directly on the Howrah–Chennai main line.
- Kovvur station serves the west-bank ghats; Samalkot Junction is a useful alternative during peak rush.
- Special festival trains were run in 2015 and are expected again — book the moment they're announced.
By road
- NH-16 links Rajahmundry to Visakhapatnam (~3.5 h), Vijayawada (~3 h) and onward to Hyderabad (~7 h).
- APSRTC runs regular services and adds festival specials from major cities.
- Expect traffic diversions and pedestrian-only zones near the riverfront on peak days — park at designated lots and use shuttles.
By air
- Rajahmundry Airport (Madhurapudi) is ~18 km from the city with daily domestic flights.
- Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada airports are the wider gateways, each about a 3-hour drive away.
- Pre-book airport taxis for festival days; arrival queues lengthen sharply on peak mornings.
Where to stay
- Rajahmundry keeps you closest to the major ghats; Kakinada and Eluru are workable alternatives.
- Temporary pilgrim camps are planned for 2027 on the Kumbh model, alongside traditional choultries and ashrams near the ghats.
- Book early — the opening and closing days fill first.
When to bathe
- 4–8 AM is the calmest window; the pre-sunrise Brahmi Muhurtham is traditionally the most auspicious.
- 8–11 AM sees crowds build steadily, with real waits at major ghats.
- First and last days are the heaviest of all twelve — the middle days give an easier darshan.
- Annadanam (free meals) and stalls operate near major ghats; eat light before the dip and stay hydrated.
Pilgrim essentials

- A slip with name, phone number and address — for every member of your group, especially children and elders.
- Change of clothes in a waterproof bag; footwear that grips wet stone.
- Drinking water, ORS sachets, daily medicines.
- Minimal cash and valuables — use ghat lockers and cloakrooms where available.
- Bathe only in designated zones; follow lifeguard and police instructions.
- The current is stronger than it looks — keep children within arm's reach at all times.
- Elderly pilgrims should prefer ghats with railings and step access over sand ramps.
- Never cross barricades for photographs.
- Pushkara Snanam — the holy dip, traditionally taken facing the rising sun.
- Pitru tarpanam and pinda pradanam — purohits are available at designated ghats.
- Dana (charity) is considered especially meritorious during Pushkaralu.
- Godavari Harathi — arrive early for a riverside spot at the evening arati.
- Shuttles typically link transit hubs to ghat clusters — confirm routes on arrival.
- If separated, head to the nearest police assistance booth; meeting points are marked at major ghats.
- Networks congest in heavy crowds — fix a meeting point and time with your group in advance.
